Billy Bragg sings Joanna Newsom’s “On a Good Day”.
Dec 31st
“Our nature does not change by will” - a rather Lutheran-sounding thought (and an effective dampener on new year’s resolutions…) from Joanna Newsom from the beautiful song “On a Good Day”, on her album “Have One On Me”. The song seems to be about a relationship that the singer knows is ending, but she can’t bring herself to break it off...

With your shimmering dress, It says no, it says yes, It says I’ve nothing left for concealing. It’s your shiftless flesh and your old girl’s grace, It’s your young girl’s face that I’m breathing. Scott Walker, “Duchess”.

Flash 10.2 on 64-bit Ubuntu: a quick HOWTO
So I downloaded the Flash 10.2 beta for Linux, but it’s only available for 32-bit. So if you’re running 64-bit, Adobe’s instructions for installation (“delete existing libflashplayer.so from the plugins folder and replace with the new version”) won’t work. However, if you’ve previously installed Flash 10.1 using Ubuntu’s flashplugin-installer...

We are only at the beginning of the end for the Coalition. There will be other horrible measures to vote on, and each time the fractiousness and rancour will increase. Mr Clegg will have to keep on betraying his “principles”, as managerialists do. And then one morning – Friday, May 6, 2011, to be precise – the Lib Dems will wake up to find they have been obliterated in English local...

My perfect 10.0s
So Kanye West’s latest album got 10.0 out of 10.0 at Pitchfork, for what it’s worth (in contrast to the art form of music as a whole, which could of course only muster 6.8). This being the internet, someone has of course put together a page recording all the albums to get 10.0. Here are the ones which I have in my collection: Kanye West – My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy The Fall –...
